Build a More Comfortable Home Office

A supportive workspace is created through the relationship between your chair, desk, screen, lighting and everyday tools—not by the number of products in the room.

01 / START WITH YOUR ROUTINE

Begin with the way you actually work.

Before changing your setup, consider how you move through the space during a normal workday. You may spend long periods typing, alternate between a computer and printed documents, join frequent video calls or need open desk space for creative work.

Understanding these habits makes it easier to arrange the room around your routine. Keep frequently used tools within comfortable reach, move occasional items farther away and remove equipment that no longer supports your daily workflow.

A thoughtful home office should feel easy to use. Every adjustment should reduce unnecessary reaching, twisting, leaning or searching.

Supportive seating

Create a balanced seated position.

Your chair should support a relaxed posture while allowing you to change position throughout the day. Comfort does not come from holding one rigid pose; it comes from having enough support and adjustability to move naturally.

  • 1
Adjust the seat so your feet rest securely on the floor or on a supportive footrest.
  • 2
Position the backrest to support the natural curve of your lower back.
  • 3
Keep your shoulders relaxed while your forearms remain near desk height.
  • 4
Leave enough room to shift, recline slightly and change position regularly.

Desk and screen position

Match the working surface to your body.

Desk height affects the position of your shoulders, wrists and neck. When typing, keep your elbows close to your body and your wrists in a neutral position. A surface that is too high can encourage raised shoulders, while one that is too low can lead to leaning forward.

Place the primary monitor directly in front of you, at a distance that allows comfortable viewing without leaning toward the screen. The upper portion of the display should sit around eye level or slightly below it.

  • 1
Use a monitor arm or riser to refine screen height and recover useful desk space.
  • 2
For dual displays, keep the most-used screen directly in front of you.
  • 3
Maintain clear leg space beneath the desk so you can reposition comfortably.

02 / FOUR CONNECTED DETAILS

Refine the environment around your main working position.

Once the chair, desk and screen are aligned, smaller improvements can make the workspace calmer and easier to use.

01

Use focused lighting without creating glare.

Combine natural light with an adjustable task lamp. Position light so it brightens the working surface without reflecting strongly from the display or shining directly into your eyes.

Aim light at the task, not at the screen.
02

Keep frequently used tools within easy reach.

Arrange the keyboard, mouse, documents, charging tools and writing accessories according to how often you use them. Reduce repeated stretching and twisting whenever possible.

Daily tools should feel immediately accessible.
03

Give cables and accessories a defined place.

Use trays, clips, drawers and desktop shelves to guide cables away from the main working area and prevent small items from spreading across the desk.

Organization should support use, not decoration.
04

Leave enough open surface for changing tasks.

A clear section of desk makes it easier to review documents, sketch ideas, clean the workspace or temporarily reposition equipment during the day.

Open space is part of a functional setup.
05

Support movement instead of one fixed posture.

Alternate between upright sitting, gentle reclining and standing when your setup allows it. Small shifts can help the workday feel less static.

The most useful position is often the next one.
06

Keep the workspace clean and easy to maintain.

Regularly remove dust from keyboards, screens, desk accessories and ventilation areas. A simple cleaning routine helps preserve a calm and usable working environment.

A maintained workspace is easier to return to.

03 / REFINE OVER TIME

Build comfort through small, observable adjustments.

01

Notice repeated discomfort or reaching.

Pay attention to where you lean, stretch, lift your shoulders or repeatedly search for tools.

02

Change one element at a time.

Adjust the chair, screen, keyboard, lighting or storage position individually so the effect is easier to understand.

03

Test the change during a normal workday.

A setup should support real tasks, not only look balanced when photographed.

04

Continue refining as your routine changes.

Your workspace can evolve with new equipment, different tasks and changing schedules.

The most effective workspace is not necessarily the most elaborate. It is the one that supports your body, keeps essential tools within reach and helps you move through the day with greater ease.
